On September 5, 2002 federal agents from the DEA raided the WAMM garden, and the Corral’s home, with automatic weapons and full-on riot gear. They seized all of the plants, leaving nearly 250 seriously ill people without medicine, and took Valerie and Mike away in handcuffs. In an unprecedented show of community support, forty WAMM members blocked the DEA in the WAMM garden with their bodies and wheelchairs across the only road off the property, and refused to leave until Valerie and Mike were released. The couple was released that afternoon, and a flurry of media activity followed.
