Valerie and her husband Mike were arrested in 1992 for the cultivation of five marijuana plants. As a result of this arrest, Valerie became the first patient in the state of California to challenge the existing law-based on the defense of medical necessity-and win. This victory ushered her into the legal, political and social spotlight of the medical marijuana health issue. Corral was instrumental in changing the law of California with proposition 215, which allows people with serious illnesses to use marijuana with the recommendation of a physician. Understanding that a lack of financial resources prevented many needy and deserving patients from receiving high-priced medical marijuana, Corral was instrumental in drafting the provision in California’s Proposition 215 which allows patients and their caregivers to cultivate their own medicine.

The Wo/Men’s Alliance for Medical Marijuana was founded in 1993 in Santa Cruz. Later that year, Valerie and Mike were again arrested, for cultivation and distribution to other patients.
